Build 2006 was a huge success!

On Saturday, September 30, 2006, Habitat for Humanity HRM held a dedication ceremony for three homes in the Forest Hills area of Dartmouth. At that dedication, three Habitat partner families received keys to their new homes. The  enthusiasm and commitment of our volunteers proved once again what can be accomplished by working together to build a stronger community. Approximately 800 volunteers worked almost 1400 shifts over 8 weeks to build 3 new houses that will provide homes for 3 families with a total of 11 children.

At the dedication ceremony, the Honourable Judy Streatch announced that the Nova Scotia Department of Community Services will make 5 lots affordable for Habitat for Humanity HRM. That means we will be able to provide safe, affordable homes for more Nova Scotia families in 2007. The Nova Scotia Home Builders Association will again build one of the homes with the volunteer participation of their members. The remaining new homes will be built by our community volunteers. Increasing the number of homes will increase demands on our volunteer base. This year’s build team is confident that we have the capacity and skills to expand the number of homes because of the dedication demonstrated in 2006. But we will need to continue to build our team.
