Dalhousie Campus Chapter
http://habitat.dsu.dal.ca/
DalHabitat is a society of
Dalhousie students affiliated with the Habitat for Humanity HRM affiliate.
This group has been organized with the main goal of contributing to various
local and regional initiatives, along with participating in the Collegiate
Challenge in the American south. The Collegiate Challenge is designed for
high school and university students who wish to work on a HFH build over the
spring break vacation. Collegiate Challenge works in partnership with school
delegations and HFH affiliates across the United States to alleviate
substandard housing. Two years ago a group of 21 students represented
Dalhousie University in Theodore (Mobile County), Alabama over reading week.
The purpose of this build was to assist those who were affected by Hurricane
Katrina in 2005.
This past February, DalHabitat participated in a Collegiate Challenge build
in New Orleans, Louisiana – departing via charter bus on February 22nd, and
returning March 3rd. Similar to the build in 2007, we participated in a
post-Katrina effort; however we expanded over double in size, with 54
participants. The
leadership team has recently been elected for the 2008 / 2009 academic year
– we are anticipating leaving even a larger impact in the Halifax Regional
Municipality and in the Southern United States.
Various fundraising initiatives are currently occurring, including multiple
on and campus benefits. If you are interested in learning about DalHabitat,
or have questions with regards to membership or sponsorship opportunities,
please contact the leadership team via email at:
habitat@dal.ca.
DalHabitat and its 2008 / 2009 executive is lead by Co-Chairs Jessica Roy
and Aaron Vomberg.
