Dominican Republic 2008

In January 2008 Mel Earley a member of our Faith relations Committee led a team of 16 to the Dominican Republic for a one week build as part of The Canadian Habitat Global Village program. The site on the outskirts of San Francisco de Macorís, a city in the centre of the DR, consists of a total of 14 simple, but dignified houses, of concrete block and rebar , with a dug foundation, and poured concrete floor. The houses are about 40 sq.m. and consist of a living-dining room, a kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom.

Team members came from all over Canada, 3 were from Nova Scotia, and ranged in age from early twenties to early seventies. Five on the team were university students, some of whom fund raised the trip cost by working holiday jobs in their local communities. The team shared work and laughter, meals, and spiritual reflection together. Mel said it was great being part of a community that is giving back and making this world a better place, one home and one family at a time. After the build the team had some time for rest, relaxation and sight seeing in the DR capital.
